Serviced Accommodation in Crewe: Why Contractors and Business Travel Are Driving Demand

A look at why Crewe is becoming a strong location for serviced accommodation, driven by demand from contractors, business travel, and working professionals

It’s Driven by Industry, Not Tourism

One thing I hear quite a lot when I mention Crewe is:

“Who’s actually staying there? It’s not exactly a holiday destination.”

And I get where that comes from. On the surface, it doesn’t look like the obvious place for serviced accommodation. But that’s usually because people are thinking about it the wrong way. Serviced accommodation isn’t just about holidays. In fact, in areas like Crewe, most of the demand I see is nothing to do with tourism at all. It’s driven by people travelling for work.

From what I’ve seen on the ground, that demand typically comes from:

• Contractors working on local projects

• Engineers and tradespeople

• Corporate teams and business travel

• Insurance stays

• People relocating to the area

Crewe has always had a strong industrial background, particularly around rail and engineering, and that’s still very much the case now. There’s a lot going on in and around the area, whether that’s infrastructure work, manufacturing, or businesses operating locally.

What that creates is consistent movement. People coming into the area for work who need somewhere to stay. And importantly, they’re not just staying for one or two nights.

A lot of these stays are:

• A few days at a time

• A couple of weeks

• Sometimes longer depending on the project

That’s where serviced accommodation fits really well.

From a guest point of view, they’re not looking for a hotel. They want somewhere they can actually live in while they’re working away.

Somewhere with:

• Space to switch off after work

• A proper kitchen

• Reliable WiFi

• A clean, comfortable setup

• Something that feels more like a home than a stopover

That’s why, in areas like Crewe, the demand makes more sense when you look at it through that lens.

Consistent Demand from Working Professionals

Another thing I’ve noticed is that places like Crewe don’t tend to rely on seasonal demand in the same way holiday locations do. Work is happening all year round, and that brings a different type of consistency.

You’ve got:

• Ongoing rail and infrastructure work

• Industrial estates and business parks

• Local companies operating in and around the area

• Contractors moving between sites across Cheshire and the wider region

All of that creates steady demand from people who need somewhere to stay during the week, and often come back to the same area multiple times. From a landlord’s point of view, that can be a big advantage.

Instead of relying on weekend bookings or peak seasons, you’re often seeing:

• Midweek occupancy

• Longer stays

• Repeat bookings from similar types of guests

That said, it’s not as simple as just having a property in the right area.

What I’ve found is that the properties that perform well are the ones that are set up properly from the start.

Things like:

• The exact location within Crewe

• The layout of the property

• The standard of furnishing

• Who you’re actually targeting

• And how the property is managed day to day

A lot of people assume it will just work because of the area, but in reality it comes down to how well everything is put together.

Final Thoughts

Crewe probably isn’t the first place people think of when it comes to serviced accommodation. But from what I’ve seen, when you look beyond the idea of holidays and focus on the type of demand that’s actually there, it starts to make a lot more sense. Like anything in property, it’s about understanding what’s really driving demand and making decisions based on that, rather than assumptions.
